COSTA RICA

June 1995

by Roy Jones

I recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica.  The following is a quick discription.

I had 2 days at Tortuguero.  Highlights included King Vulture, Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Bronzy Hermit, and White-collared Manakin.  1/2 a day at Braulio Carillo we spent most of our time riding the new tram.  Highlights were Long-tailed Tyrant, Speckled Tanager, Lattice-tailed Trogon, Black-and-Yellow Tanager.  We spent 2 days at hte Los Inocentes Lodge visiting only Santa Rosa in the area Not many highlights from this but I did get the Long-tailed Manakin thier.  Next we stayed at the Belmont lodge near Monte Verde.  I got lots of birds including good looks at Three-wattled Bellbird, Gray-throated Leaftosser, and close looks at a pair of Resplendent Quetzals.  Our last stop was a 4 hour stop at Carara.  This is a fantastic place.  I got Scarlet Macaws and 3 species of Trogons in the first 300 yards of the main trail.

The total time in Costa Rica was 11 days.  I was surprised at how good the birding was in San Jose.
