MEXICO -- VERACRUZ (PALENQUE) TIPS

May 3, 1998

Regarding the Palenque area: my wife, two friends and I visited Palenque and Yaxchilan in mid-February this year. We flew into Villahermosa but I don't know much about birding in that area. We had a great trip and the birding was wonderful. In retrospect I don't know if I would go to Yaxchilan for an extended trip again until things calm down a bit there - safety is a concern in that region. If you go to Palenque I would highly recommend a day trip down the Jonuta Road. It heads north from Hwy 186 approx. 20 kilometers west of the turnoff to Palenque at Hwy 199. Every time I have been on that road the birding has been excellent.
