BOLIVIA

7 June - 7 July  1997

by Hein Prinsen and Elisabeth Addink

From 7 June to 7 July 1997 my girlfriend and I made a trip through Bolivia. We traveled by public transport and made two treks in the Andes. Arriving in Santa Cruz, we followed the 'new' road to Cochabamba (going north around Amboro NP) and from there we took a plane to Sucre. After some days in and around Sucre we flew to La Paz from where we visited Lake Titicaca, Sorata and walked the very impressive El Cumbre - Coroico trek (going from 4800m to 1800m a.s.l. in less than 40 kilometers).

Below follows a brief trip report. An annotated checklist of the bird species observed by us is attached to this mail. I am still writing up a complete trip report, which in due time will be available from Dutch Birding Travel Reports.

After a trip of 23 hours we arrived on the 7th of June at 13.00h at Viru Viru airport near Santa Cruz. Already before the airplane came to a stand still, we saw two Red-legged Seriemas just next to the airstrip! These two birds could be seen well from the departure hall, from where I was also lucky to discover a Greater Rhea which was feeding in a field adjacent to the airport. This was really a very good beginning of our holiday. After some hassling we were able to find a taxi who took us to Montero from where we caught a bus to Buena Vista, our first destination on our itinerary. After a spectacular ride on the back of a motorbike, we finally arrived, after 26 hours of traveling, at the beautiful and brand new Hotel 'Flora and Fauna', owned by Robin Clarke. He is one of the founders of the Amboro National Park and previously owned the, now closed, Hotel Amboro in Buena Vista (renowned for its Band-tailed Manakins). Hotel 'Flora and Fauna' is situated at a ridge with a spectacular view across a vast area of secondary growth and primary rain forest. Part of its premises is a large track of undisturbed lowland rainforest, with a large number of interesting bird species. We stayed in this hotel for three nights (delicious food!) and birded daily in the adjacent forest and secondary scrub. I think this place gives a good introduction to birding the lower parts of the nearby Amboro NP, and Robin can give you all the information you want. During our stay we saw over one hundred bird species, including two new species for 'Amboro'; Dusky-throated Antshrike and Dusky-capped Greenlet. Personal favorites include very close views of Slender-tailed and Amethyst Woodstars.

We then moved on to another 'jungle' lodge; Hotel El Puente near Buenavista. Birding was much less productive at this lowland site, but we managed to find a large 'bird party', which held a good number of tanagers, flycatchers, woodcreepers, honeycreepers, etc. We also had very nice views of a male Round-tailed Manakin. Unfortunately, due to a damaged cable, the Oilbird-cave was only accessible on the weekend, meaning that this species had to be skipped from my 'wanted list'.

A more productive area was found in the remnant patches of cloud forests at Tablas Montes. During one day of birding/walking we saw a.o. Golden-headed Quetzal, Rufous-bellied Bush-Tyrant, Pale-legged Warbler, Light-crowned Spinetail, Bolivian Tyrannulet, Red-crested Cotinga and heard a Rufous-banded Owl at dawn.

From Cochabamba we made two day-trips to the spa of Liriuni and the mountains of Cerro Tunari, where we were able to see the 'resident' endemics as well as Giant Conebill, Rufous-bellied Saltator and a pair of Torrent Ducks in full swing in the river. But no Condors... The Laguna Alalay, which is mentioned as a good birding spot in most reports, seems to be destined to become something else: a dike with a road has been constructed through the middle of the lake. However, it still hosted large numbers of White-tufted Grebes, Puna Ibises and ducks as well as the beautiful Many-colored Rush-Tyrant.

After three days in smoggy Cochabamba we took a plane to Sucre, from where we made an impressive three-day hike in the Cordillera del Fraile to the crater Maragua. Highlight, birdwise, was the discovery of a pair of Wedge-tailed Hillstars of which I managed to take some fairly good photographs. Another good find was an immature or eclipse male Green-tailed Trainbearer, which according to the checklist of Bolivia hadn't been recorded in Chuquisaca before. Also the flocks of Citron-headed Yellow-Finches and Bolivian Blackbirds were noteworthy.

After a visit to the colourful Indian market of Tarabuco we flew to La Paz, from where we directly continued our journey to Lake Titicaca. Here we visited Isla de Sol, which I didn't think very special. The five Titicaca Flightless Grebes we saw on our very last visit to the lake shore (somewhere NE of Copacabana) were most welcome. North of the lake, at the foot of the Illampu massif, the relaxed village of Sorata gave a nice introduction to the Andean realms of Bolivia. Our second day of birding in this stunning landscape produced a total of four of the 'very' endemic Berlepsch's Canasteros on the slope opposite the village. I should say that these birds really looked much the same as the canasteros seen near Sucre (except for the not so rufous but brown wings, and more rufous tail), and if seen there I wouldn't have bothered a closer look. Other birds seen included a.o. nice views of Andean Condors (finally!), possible Bicolored Hawk, about 10 Green-tailed Trainbearers, Paramo Pipit and Rusty Flowerpiercer.

From La Paz we took a bus to the Cumbre pass (4600 m a.s.l.) from where we made a five day trek down to the village of Chairo (1800 m a.s.l.). This trek parallels the famous and dangerous Cumbre-Coroico road, but is much more relaxed since it is a small Inca road only to be traveled by foot. It should hold the same number of bird species, and during our walk we saw several interesting ones. However, since we walked with rather heavy back-packs and didn't stop for every bird, we dipped on some very sought-after species which should occur along this trail (e.g. Hooded Mountain-Toucan, Scribble-tailed Canastero, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, etc.). We managed to see a.o. Black-faced Ibis, Short-tailed Finch (two at a boulder slope at 4000 m a.s.l.), Puna Snipe, White-rumped Hawk, a male Rufous-capped Thornbill, Rufous-faced Antpitta (one seen very well), Blue-banded Toucanet, Yungas Manakin, and many more species. Especially the descent through undisturbed temperate and subtropical forest was very impressive. Unfortunately, large forested areas at the end of the trek, close to the villages, have been cut and the secondary vegetation ('barbecho') is difficult to pass through and poor in good birds.

When we finally arrived in Coroico all hotels were booked and we ended in a very nice resort appr. 15 minutes by car SE from town; Hotel La Finca. Near this hotel lies a remnant patch of more or less undisturbed forest (alt. 2000 m.), which turned out to be very productive. During three hours of birding I saw a.o. Andean Guan, Bronzy Inca, Booted Racket-tail, Versicolored Barbet, in a huge 'bird-party' besides nine tanager species also Montane and Buff-browed Foliage-gleaners and close views of two fighting Striped Treehunters, and in one fruiting tree a pair of Scarlet-breasted Fruiteaters, a female Band-tailed Fruiteater and a displaying male Yungas Manakin! This surprising find was a very nice end of our holiday.
