CHILE:
CENTRAL AND SOUTH, &  TIERRA  DEL FUEGO

02 February - 23 March 2000

by Philipp Derks

Introduction

In February and March 2000 I went birdwatching in southern Chile and Tierra
del Fuego  (Argentine side).  I looked for seabirds from several ships and
visited birdareas in Chile as well.

Because a lot of information is already known and can be found  elsewhere I have tried to provide information which is less available, along with some very general
data.

General information

For general travel information about Chile and Tierra del Fuego see  Chile & Easter Island, Wayne Bernhardson, Lonely Planet Publications”. For descriptions of national parks etc. in more southern areas one can better use Trekking in the Patagonian Andes,  Clem Lindenmayer,  Lonely Planet Publications 1998.  There are 32 national parks,  47 national reserves and 13 natural monuments in Chile.

Bird Information

Species

There are about 430 species recorded in Chile of which 9 are endemic. These
are Slender-billed Parakeet,  Crag Chilia,  Chilean Seaside-Cinclodes,  Dusky-
Tailed Canastero,  Chestnut-throated Huet-Huet,  Moustached Turca, White-throated Tapaculo, Dusky Tapaculo and Chilean Mockingbird. They all can be found
in central Chile. There are 5 endemic bird areas. There are 15 threatened species
of which 3 are critically endangered and minimal 15 are near-threatened.

Organisations

Protected areas are controlled by CONAF, Corporation Nacional Forestal.

Union de Ornithologos de Chile (UNORCH), a Birdlife Partner Designate, carries
out research, education and promotional programmes on Chilean birds, their diversity and need for conservation (Website http://www.geocities.com/Rainforest/4372/). An information bulletin is produced  tree times a year.  Boletin Chileno de Ornithologia, a scientific bulletin,  is published annually. Sight records are  published in these bulletins.

The Neotropical Bird Club (c/o the Lodge, Sandy, Bedfordshire, SG19 2DL, UK)  also
publishes Chilean sight records  in its journal Cotinga.

Birding

For birding in northern and central Chile (Chiloe as most southern area) see The essential guide to birding in Chile, Mark Pearman, Worldwide publications. Pearman & Colcombe 1995 (for more information click here for ‘Update 2004’.
Descriptions of birdareas, lists of observed species and travel information like public transport are given. Some more good bird areas are given by Alvaro Jaramillo* and can be consulted on the Internet (“Alvaro Jaramillo”,  “birding  sites in Chile”).

Descriptions of more southern birdareas are referred to in Where to watch birds in South America, Nigel Wheatly  Christopher Helm Ltd, London 1994” (not so helpful about public transport). Travel reports such as for example A birders guide to travel in Argentina, Nick & Daryl Gardner 1990  (at any rate obtainable from the Travel Report  Service, Reeweg 1, 8381 GA  Vledder, the Netherlands; www.ecotouristservices.nl) were useful to me regarding Tierra del Fuego. Many tripreports can be consulted on the Internet (“birding links to the world”, search for “Chile” and “Blake Maybank”  in Canada is very good).

Public transport is good in Chile and Tierra del Fuego. Birdlocations are often easily reachable. Hitchhiking is rather easy (also on Tierra del Fuego)  but in more southern regions there is often not much traffic. It is always best to ask for information about  public transport etc. at the tourist office in the city (the information given in travel reports and in guides is not always current).
I never hired a car.

Literature

Fieldguides and handbooks are given in “Pearman”  (with some comments) and “de la Pena”. It is likely that this most recent last guide Collins illustrated checklist, birds of southern South america and Antarctica, de la Pena and Rumboll, HarperCollins publishers Ltd 1998  is the best at this moment. I liked to use this book in combination with The birds of Chile, Araya and Chester, Latour Santiago 1993,  in the field. Unlike other  fieldguides it is widely available in Europe. Good handbooks, but heavy to carry, are Birds of the high Andes, Fjeldsa and Krabbe, Apollo Books Denmark 1990 and The birds of South America  vol. 1 & 2, Ridgely and Tudor, Univ. of Texas Press, Austin Texas USA 1989 and 1994. Of course, the well known seabird guides such as Harrison’s  identification guides are very useful. Perhaps it is worthwile  to mention some more simple looking light-weighted guides which are not well known and not mentioned in ‘’Pearman”  and “de la Pena”. Several of these books were available in Chile and Tierra del Fuego during my trip (in bookshops in larger cities and at the airport of Punta Arenas for example). Together for example with “de la Pena” you may find some more identification and other information on your excursions.

These books are:

-------- Aves de Chile, Birds of Chile, Sharon R. Chester, Wandering Albatross San Mateo USA  1995. This small book (in English) can be used as a supplement which its color drawings to the black and white illustrated guide The birds of Chile, Araya and Chester, Latour Santiago 1993

--------  Aves de Tierra del Fuego y  Cabo de Hornos, guia de campo, Ricardo Clark, Ediciones L.O.L.A.  Buenos Aires 1986. This is  rather small book  (in Spanish) with simple  black and white drawings. Some information  about Tierra del Fuego can be useful perhaps.

--------  Giua de Campo para las aves de Magallanes, Venegas C.  y J. Jory  H., Instituto de la  Patagonia, Punta Arenas Chile 1979. A rather small book ( in Spanish) which can be perhaps useful in southern areas.

---------  Donde observar aves en el parque nacional Torres del Paine, guia de identification,  Couve  y Ojeda, Fantastico Sur – Birding and Nature  Tours,  Punta Arenas Chile 1999  (during my visit this was available in the park). This is a very small book, good for a list and some information  about birds in the National Park Torres del Paine. In Spanish and with color pictures.

‘ there will be soon  more books available probably for example Guia de Aves de Patagonia y Tierra del Fuego, Narosky &
 Babarskas, Zagier & Urrety, 2001’

One can use the Internet everywhere (public houses etc,) in Chile and Tierra del Fuego.

At the Museum in Punta Arenas  there is a big collection  of patagonian birds.

Locations Visited

Because much can be found in the above mentioned books and reports, only some short remarks about the places I  visited, mainly concerning the environment and weather and occasionally about the public transport are given here:

-----  Estero Lampa  a saline marsh (about 30 km NW of Santiago).
waterlevel fluctuating greatly

-----  Punta Concon  rocky coast (near Vina del Mar),  good seabird watching Concon

-----  Punta Liles the same situation Quintero

-----  La Campana  most important park of Chile concerning rare birds national park (near Olmue)  with six of the nine mainland endemics:  Crag Chilia, Dusky tailed Canastero, Moustached Turca, White throated Tapaculo, Dusky Tapaculo and Chilean Mockingbird

-----  Punta Caucahapi  rocky coast,  rather good sabird watching Chiloe not many  (mini)buses to that place

-----  Punta Guabun rocky coast with some beach quite near, excellent Chiloe seabird waching
not many (mini)buses to that place

----- Puerto Montt good seabird watching.  See birdcounts - In my case: start 28/2 20.00 h, arrival 2/3 Puerto Natales 10.30 h (ferry, Navimag- 28 + 29/2 calm weather, wind SW, most of the time company) cloudy non-stop 28/2 Puerto Montt area 41 25 00 (only very 29/2 44 18 00 (9.45) – 45 53 40 (21.15 h short Puerto at dark at the Pacific Ocean.  Eden), 4 1/3 the same weather but sometimes some days rain.  48 14 00 (9.45) - 50 34 38 (21.30 h) 2/3 idem but no rain.  52 07 00 (8.45 h) - 51 55 40 (10.30 h, harbour Puerto Natales) look for Westland Petrels (most people have overlooked them for years)

----- Seno Otway area with low dunes (about 35 km NW of Punta Arenas) Pinguinera

----- Torres del Paine (145 km NW of Puerto Natales) national park 4/3 short trek: Camping Las Torres to Torres del Paine Lookout 5/3 route north side Lago Nordenskjold (direction Refugio Lago Pehoe) 6/3 Lago Pehoe by boat, east side Lago Grey (direction Ventisquero Grey)

----- Rio Grande the small and large pool in the airport area were surroundings dried out.  The large pool and the bushy slopes at the north side were not easily accesible anymore (also a fence) (5 km W of Rio Grande) often rather bad weather, much heavy rain no public transport from Rio Grande to Rio Chico (bridge) (15–20 km NW of Rio Grande)

----- Ushuaia rubbish dump location is likely not used anymore, surroundings but is still good for birdwatching.  Look into the rather deep hole (otherwise caracara’s can be missed easily easily) (7 km W of Ushuaia) 16/3 very bad weather with snow

----- Tierra del Fuego (18 km W of Ushuaia) (national park) 18/3 trek from Lago Roca to Bahia Lapathaia national Park (route 3) 19/3 coastal trek: Bahia Lapataia and Bahia Ensenada

------ Isla de Martillo small islet, big part is rather low and flat.  pinguinera birdwatching only from boat Beagle Canal near (Est.  Haberton: 90 km E of Ushuaia) Estancia Haberton

------ Porvenir – Punta good seabird watching.  See ‘birdcounts’ Arenas (ferry) 21/3 wind: S, almost no waves, sunny Punta Arenas - 22/3 wind: S 3-4, small waves, cloudy Porvenir and sometimes sunny Return

Bird Counts

The birdnumbers are often approximate, so often round figures are used (“about” is regularly used when the given figure is more uncertain and at high numbers).  Concerning seabird watching from the Puerto Montt – Puerto Natales ferry (Navimag) and during the trips on the Strait of Magellan extrapolated numbers between brackets are regularly given to represent all birds present (not counted as well).  So during the Puerto Montt – Puerto Natales trip only during a part of the day were birds counted.  On the Strait of Magellan (Punta Arenas – Punta Porvenir ferry) only birds from one side of the boat were counted because of the sunlight or the wind during the entire sailing time i.e.  2 1/2/ houres one way (for extrapolation special criterions have been used depending on the numbers and regularity of the observations etc.; concerning this a special report is available).  Total counting time at the Navimag-ship: 28/2 0 (it means only Puerto Montt surroundings), 29/2 5 ½ , 1/3 5 ¾ 2/3 1 ¼ houres)
