ECUADOR  --  NORTHWEST

3-14 September 1997

By Jon Hornbuckle

After fieldwork in Bolivia, I birded NW Ecuador with Robin Brace from Sept 3 - 14, at localities not visited on my previous two trips, namely Lita - El Placer, Cerro Golondrinas, Pedro V Maldonado, Bellavista and Yanacocha. Highlights were Giant, Yellow-breasted and Scaled Antpittas, Rufous-breasted Antthrush, Wattled Guan, Beautiful Jay and Rufous-and-white Tanager. The sound of chainsaws was heard daily, except when at Bellavista and Yanacocha, and there seems little hope for the Pedro V Maldonado area, the only "regular" site for the rare Scarlet-breasted Dacnis and Double-banded Greytail. On the positive side, private efforts to conserve some of the remaining forest are expanding, especially around Mindo and Cerro Golondrinas.

We used public transport in the Lita area, which was a little time-consuming, and to reach the base for Cerro Golondrinas. A vehicle was necesssary for the other sites and we were fortunate in being the guests of Jane Lyons and Vinicio Perez. We experienced some rain at Lita, especially during the night, and in the afternoons around Mindo, but otherwise it was exceptionally dry in this region of high rainfall.

We owe a particular debt to Jane and Vinicio who made our last three days so rewarding and "easy", and also wish to thank Niels Krabbe, Eliza Onate, Piet Sabbe and the Golondrinas Project volunteers for their assistance.

NOTES ON SITES

The Mindo area and Yanacocha are well documented. The Lita area features in Best, Heijnen and Williams (1997) and Wheatley (1994) but both accounts are a little outdated and inaccurate. There are better sites than Lita with the same birds, and more, in SW Colombia, but solo visits could be risky.LitaLita, which has a basic hotel and restaurant, is easily reached by bus, changing at Ibarra. There is no longer any extensive forest within walking distance, but there are birds along the railway / river and some forest on the other side of the river accessed by crossing the foot-bridge near the station, climbing the hill and keeping right. Below Lita you can take the train to El Placer where there still is accessible good forest, but the schedule is unreliable and highly variable. When we were there, they intended to have a workmen's train at 05.30ish every morning, which you can take, but it only ran 50% of the days. There should be one or two passenger trains a day but again these only ran on half the days due to the state of the line, and as they come from Ibarra, they are too late for good birding. Some buses continue to San Lorenzo on the coast but the only good forest we saw along the road was just before Alto Tambo, the only point where the road crosses the railway. We went as far as Durango, where lower elevation species such as Five-coloured Barbet and Purple-chested Hummingbird occur, but could not find any trails going into the forest there. Logging is certainly continuing in the lowlands, which may leave El Placer, well covered by Best et al, as the only decent site. There is no hotel at El Placer but it should be possible to camp or stay somewhere in the small settlement.

Best birds for me were:

Lita, railway Bronzy Hermit, Stripe-billed Aracari, Choco Toucan, Slate-throated Gnatcatcher, Dusky-faced and Scarlet-browed Tanagers

Lita, forest patch above and before town Pacific Streaked Antwren, Indigo Flowerpiercer

Alto Tambo Tooth-billed Hummingbird, Brown-billed Scythebill, Yellow-collared Chlorophonia, Moss-backed and the superb Scarlet-and-white Tanagers

El Placer White-eyed Trogon, Esmeraldas Antbird, Choco Tapaculo, Pale-vented and White-throated Thrushes, while RCB had Cinnamon and Lita Woodpeckers and Gold-chested Tanager

Durango Hook-billed Kite, Blue-whiskered and Red-winged Tanagers

Higher up is the vast, poorly-known Cotacachi-Cayapas Reserve. This can be accessed above the village of Cristal, the best way being to arrange transport with a ranger based at the office on the Ibarra road out of Lita. We sat, rather uncomfortably, on the back of a beach-type buggy with superb suspension on the rough track up to the forest edge. To do justice to this area, it would be necessary to camp and self-cater. The altitude overlaps with the lower range of Cerro Golondrinas but it appears to be much wetter here and so there will be differences in the avifauna. Our brief visit produced Blue-fronted Parrotlet, Gorgeted Sunangel, Fulvous Treerunner, Uniform Treehunter, Yellow-breasted Antpitta, Narino Tapaculo and Dusky Bush-Tanager.

Mindo

This area is well-documented but surprisingly few people seem to use the services of the very knowledgeable local guide Vinicio Perez, contactable at Eloy Alfaro 3651, Castilla Postal 17-17-717, Quito, tel 593-2-451035, fax 459627, e-mail: jlyons@birdlife.org.ec. He taped out both Scaled and Giant Antpitta, and could have shown us lekking Cock-of-the Rock had we had more time. His modestly priced house / lodge, along the first road on the right after the bridge, was an ideal place to stay. We did see Wattled Guan, Rufous-fronted Wood-Quail, Scaled Fruiteater and Narino Tapaculo along the tarred road above Mindo.

Bellavista

This is a fairly new, private reserve at the upper end of the old Nono-Mindo road. There is a fine lodge, not cheap, which is now being used by tour groups, and a self-catering hostel and campsite. It is run by the British owner Richard Parsons, contactable at Casilla 17-12-103, Quito, tel/ fax 509 255, or cellular in Bellavista 490891, e-mail: aecie3@ecnet.ec - request brochure and bird-list. There are good trails and very active hummingbird feeders. It can be reached without a car but it is much better to have one. Key birds here are Tanager-Finch, along the road below the lodge, and Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan which is quite common. Giant Antpitta occurs at lower elevations and other possibilities are Swallow-tailed Nightjar, White-faced Nunbird, Beautiful Jay and a host of hummers and tanagers.

Pedro V Maldonado

The road from Mindo to the Santo Domingo - Esmeraldas highway passes through Pedro V Maldonado, after which there is a dirt road to the right leading to patches of forest - more details from Vinicio. This is variously known as the "Choco" or the Dacnis Trail. It has been the only reliable site for the rare Scarlet-breasted Dacnis, and Double-banded Greytail, new to Ecuador, has been found there. It is good for antbirds and lowland Choco species such as White-tipped Cotinga, Blue-whiskered Tanager and Stripe-throated Wren. However, much of the forest has been cut recently and the specialities are likely to be more and more difficult to find.

Yanacocha

Well covered by Best et al. We parked at the Water Co.(EMAPA) gate near the Hacienda Yanacocha buildings, as it was locked (unusual in the week), and walked along the track through bushy paramo - excellent for hummers, including Black-breasted and Sapphire-vented Pufflegs - to a good area of montane forest overlooking Volcan Pichincha, where Black-collared Jay was the best bird.

SYSTEMATIC LIST OF BIRDS

Taxonomy and names follow Birds of the World: A Checklist by JF Clements (1991 + updates), with additional published species asterisked. A cross means the species was seen and "h" that it was only heard.
