Itinerary

Feb. 13: Flew from Austin, Texas to Trinidad.  Arrived at Asa Wright Nature Centre (AW) after dark.

Feb. 14:  Birded AW, including a guided trip to Dunston’s Cave in the a.m.; visited Agricultural Research Station (ARS) in early p.m. and walked a mile of Blanchisuesse Road (BR) immediately below AW from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m.

Feb. 15: Birded AW until 7:30 a.m., then drove up BR starting at 8:30.  Birded on crest of road from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. then continued north on BR to the town of Blanchisuesse on the north coast.  Birded a swampy area at east end of town from noon until 1:00 p.m. Primarily played tourist after that by driving North Coast Road west and then south to Barataria before taking Churchill-Roosevelt Highway back to Piarco Airport then east to Arima and took BR back to AW.

Feb 16:  Early morning (6:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m) at Wallerfield, then visited an area south of Wallerfield until noon; attempted to visit Aripo Savanna but access road mentioned by Murphy has been blocked; re-visited ARS from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.; visited Trincity Sewage Ponds (Trincity) from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; birded up BR from Arima from about 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Feb 17:  Started before dawn on crest of BR, birded crest area until 9:30 a.m.; birded AW from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.  Sat on AW veranda from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.; left AW for Caroni Swamp at 2:00 p.m.; birded Caroni rice fields from 3:15 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and then took mangrove swamp tour until near dusk.

Feb 18:  Birded AW trails until 9:00 a.m.; drove down BR, went back to ARS from 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.; birded Arena Forest from noon to 2:45 p.m.; drove back to Caroni and birded mangroves along boat docks from 3:15 p.m. until 4:45 p.m. in vain search for the damnable Red-capped Cardinal and then drove through rice fields for 15 minutes.  Drove back to AW.

Feb 19:  Sat on AW veranda from 6:15 a.m. until 7:00 a.m.  Drove to airport and flew back to Austin.

Comments

Weather was generally good – had brief showers on three days, but mostly sunny to partly cloudy.  High temperatures were in the 80's to low 90's F, depending on elevation, and cooled to around 70 F at night.  Humidity was lower than expected and was usually pleasant in the shade at any time of day and at any elevation.

Mosquitoes were only seen occasionally and typically only when near fresh water – never swatted more than two to four per day.  Returned home with 181 chigger bites, but chigger bites do not cause me to itch so I did not take any precautions against them.

Contrary to my expectations and the experience of many others, hummingbird numbers at Asa Wright feeders were low.  This could be because hummingbirds were breeding and dispersed on territories at this time.

I did not use Asa Wright guiding services (except for first trip to Caroni because of disinclination to drive back in dark on unfamiliar roads) due to personal preferences.  Probably missed a few species because of this and everyone I talked to at Asa Wright raved about the knowledge and friendliness of the guides.

Found the directions in the Murphy bird-finding guide to be good.  Did not always find some species  at certain locations as easily as was made to expect by Murphy (or necessarily found them at all!), but this could be due to time of year or my own incompetence.

Asa Wright leads night trips to Wallerfield (which I did not take) on which they apparently regularly get Tropical Screech-Owl, Common Pauraque, Common Potoo, and White-tailed Nightjar.
