Introduction

I'm finally getting busy posting the photos we took during our wonderful trip to Trinidad and Tobago (June 6-17, 2000).

I'm going to try my best not to get carried away and write too much.  If you want more information about anything, please ask.

Trinidad

While in Trinidad, we stayed at the famous Asa Wright Nature Centre, located in a beautiful mountain valley.  Our room was very nice, and the cool mountain air made it very comfortable at night.  Our room had a nice view down the valley.

The veranda of the main house at Asa Wright is famous for good reason.  In addition to the beautiful view of the rainforest, it's great to be there as the staff fills the numerous feeders (tray feeders with bread and fruit and hummingbird feeders) every morning to watch the feeding frenzy that follows!

Many species of hummingbirds came in to feed at the feeders and/or the flowers.  (White-necked Jacobins were the most obvious ones, but I saw at least eight other species, just from the veranda!) The list of honeycreepers and tanagers (including a pair of Palm Tanagers nesting right on the veranda) was equally impressive.  Along with the many other species of birds that came in, agoutis were frequent visitors.  On sunny afternoons, huge Tegu lizards would bask on the sidewalk near the feeders.

When we could pull ourselves away from the veranda, we'd hike down the trails.  In addition to the new birds I found on almost every hike, I always spent at least a few minutes at the White-bearded Manakin lek.  Interesting insects were all around, and the vegetation was incredibly lush.

Finally, if the tropical heat got to be too much for us, we could take a dip in the natural pool fed by one of the small streams found in the valley.

We spent much of our time in Trinidad on field trips to various parts of the island.  I didn't do a lot of photography on these trips as I was too busy birding.  However, I did try to take at least a shot or two of each destination.

The trips were led by a local guide, Jogie Ramlal.  We had five people in our group, which was just about perfect.  Jogie took us everywhere in his maxi-taxi.  I never got used to being on the left side of the road!  Jogie is incredibly knowledgeable about the birds (and all other flora and fauna) of Trinidad, and I know our list would have been much shorter without his help.

Our first trip was an all-day affair over the mountains to the town of Blanchisseuse, on the Caribbean.  We stopped many times on the way to and from Blanchisseuse to look for birds.  This trip took us to the highest elevation we would visit in Trinidad.

The next field trip also took all day.  We first stopped at the Agricultural Research Station just south of the northern mountain range.  We saw many new birds there, the first open, lowland habitat we visited.  From there we drove on to the east (Atlantic) coast of the island to the Nariva Swamp.  We stopped to look for birds in the mangroves, then spent time at a freshwater marsh looking for its bird specialties.  We remained in the area until dusk to watch the Red-bellied Macaws come to roost in palms very close to the beach (with Magnificent Frigatebirds drifting by overhead).

The following day was the only time rain really had any influence on our trip.  We went birding at Wallerfield, the site of a US airbase during WWII.  We had a fantastic time early in the morning chasing flycatchers and other birds along the edges of the old roads and runways.  We also got to see more Red-bellied Macaws coming in to eat the fruits of the moriche palms in the area.  These macaws were much closer than the ones I'd seen the day before, but the rain was falling and I didn't get any pictures.  We also stopped at the Arena Forest preserve, but only spent a brief time birding its edge before heading back to Asa Wright.

Nita's favorite field trip was a late evening visit to the beach at Matura Bay to watch the Leatherback Sea Turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.  It was amazing to watch these huge turtles from such close range.  We also saw a small boa as we were returning to the maxi-taxi for our ride home.

The final field trip during the Trinidad portion of the trip was to the famous Caroni Swamp.  I was happy that we stopped at a sewage treatment center for some quick birding on the way.  Nonbirders may be surprised by this, but such places are rich in birdlife.  After another brief stop at a marsh near the swamp, we finally made it to Caroni.  There we boarded a small boat for a tour of the swamp.

Tobago

We boarded a small plane in Trinidad and made the 14 minute flight to Tobago.  Although we only stayed on Tobago for a few days, we were able to see the entire island.  The airport is in the far southwestern corner of the island, and we stayed at a resort in Speyside at the opposite end.  (It is 26 miles from Trinidad to Tobago, and Tobago is also 26 miles long.)

Our first order of business was to check in at the Blue Waters Inn, a nice place right on the water.  It was a little warmer there at sea level, but the strong sea breeze kept it from getting too hot.  Quite a few interesting birds were found around the buildings, particularly a Blue-crowned Motmot that roosted on our porch at night.

A steel drum player was featured during dinner one evening - our first exposure to the instrument in person.

On our first afternoon we took a walk with Adolphus James, the legendary local birding guide.  Once again, we were in very good hands.  We were able to pick up many of the local bird specialties in a short time with Mr. James.  He was very good at recognizing and imitating local bird songs and calls.  Gay and I accompanied Mr. James on a walk in the highland rain forest two days later.  Darkness under the canopy and the threat of rain (which never materialized) prevented any photography, but the birding was great.

The highlight of the Tobago leg of the trip for me was the low point for Nita.  We took a glassbottom boat to Little Tobago Island, probably not much over a mile offshore.  It was hard to concentrate on the beautiful coral and fish below as Nita was getting very seasick next to me!  We made it to the island and left Nita to recover on the shore.  Gay and I hiked over the island to watch the seabirds flying about on the other side.  The boat ride back was a little faster and smoother, and Nita made it with less trouble.

I did get to do a little snorkeling on one afternoon.  It was my first snorkeling experience, and I really loved it.  Before we knew it we had to pack our stuff for the long trip home.  I don't know about Nita, but I'm ready to go back right now!
