Big Day (Bird Race)

13 September 1998

by Christopher L. Wood

Big Day Statistics:

Comments:

“This was our first attempt at a Big Day in Indiana.  In fact, Jim and I met less than a month earlier, the day I arrived after moving to attend graduate school in Indiana.  I had a total of 14 state life birds on this trip as we broke the previous September Big Day record of 111 species.  We were helped by a nice variety of warblers (22), but had very few hawks, and only a moderate number of shorebirds.  This is our first of four monthly record-breaking Big Days this year.  Hopefully by the time May comes, we will have enough experience to contend with our friends up north.  In the meantime, we will have fun with breaking the monthly Big Day records.”
