| Note: Parts of the
western coast of Cape Breton Island, centred on the French speaking communities of Chéticamp and Grand Étang, frequently experience strong southeasterly winds, locally called Les Suétes (derived from the French word for southeast: sud est). The Suétes occur when a cold front propels SE winds across the Cape Breton Highlands, and as the winds descend the west slope of the highlands, strong gusts develop, often surpassing hurricane force (150 kph). |
