CUBA
Big Day (Bird Race)
6 April 2000
by Peter Kaestner
Big Day Statistics:
- 112 species (plus one form)
- 0500 to 1900 hours
- 500 km by car, 1 km by foot.
- Visiting: Cayo Coco to Zapata Swamp to Playa Giron.
- Species of Note: Gundlach's Hawk (Km 264 on A-1 road
near Santa Clara), Lesser Black-backed Gull (V - first record for Cuba?),
Spotted Rail (hard to see), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (R), Thick-billed
Vireo (Local).
Comments: Two birds (Clapper Rail and Merlin) were
deleted as they were seen first by a tour group that I encountered in the
field. (I knew in advance that they would be there.) Because
my brother had departed the day before, the effort is not a champion big
day.
