1 - 16 April 2001
by Wayne Fisher
I spent the first half of April in Costa Rica. Here is a quick report of what we saw.
Costa Rica has a wide variety of habitats. There is a range of mountains through the center of the country. There are different habitats at low, mid and high elevations. The Carribean side is different from the Pacific side. North and South Pacific shores are different.
We visited six different sites:
Monteverde - Pacific side at around 4500 ft.
Carara - Mid Pacific side at sea level
La Selva Verde - Carribean Side near sea level
Cerro de la Muerte - high mountains. We stayed at 7200 ft and drive
to 11200.
Rancho Naturalista - Carribean side at 3300 feet.
Osa Peninsula - Sea level on the south Pacific side.
The one area that we didn't get to is the Guanacaste region on the north Pacific side.
Temperatures varied from pleasant at the mountain sites to obnoxiously hot and humid at sea level. There were a number of cloudy days with scattered showers, and we got well drenched a couple of times. Of course, it was hot enough that getting well drenched wasn't all bad.
Overall the group saw 416 species. I saw about 375 well enough to claim them. The group saw 36 species of hummingbird, and my hummingbird-fanatic girlfriend saw all 36 ( I missed 4). Also 5 species of toucan, the Resplendent Quetzal, Scarlet Macaws, and the Three Wattled Bellbird.
About 100 of the species were ones that I have seen in North America. A number of others I had seen in Belize or Trinidad.
There were a large number of flycatchers. I hadn't studied up on the flycatchers - I was too buzy studying the more exotic birds. The flycatchers presented lots of dilemas - did I see that one well enough to claim, or am I just taking the guides word for it?
We also saw three species of poison dart frog, iguanas, and the Jesus Christ Lizard (they walk on water). Mammals included Coati, sloths and Jaguarundi, plus Howler and Squirrel monkeys.
The places we stayed had good birding "right out the door". Most days we did a series of short walks rather than all day outings. This meant that the less hard-core birders could take a siesta after lunch while the more intense ones were out.
We spent a total of three nights at the Hotel Bougainvillea in San Jose, at the beginning, middle and end of the trip. The gardens there were a good introducion to the more common birds, and we found two good birds there: Tropical Screech Owl and Prevost's Ground Sparrow.
This trip was lead by another birdchatter, Kevin Loughlin, and Glenn Crawford.
Some highlights:
A pool in a river at Carara where in about a half hour we had Little and Long Tailed Hermits battling over bathing rights, Red Capped and Blue Crowned Mannikins, and Chestnut Backed Antbird and Black Faced Antthrush.
That day at Carara we saw six species of antbird, including excellent views of Streak-chested Antpitta. My comment at dinner that night: "I though antbirds were supposed to be hard." (Streak-chested Antpitta was formerly know as Spectaled Antpitta).
The six Scarlet Macaws that came to a tree by the airport in Puerto Jimenez as we were about to leave the Osa Penninsula
Snowcaps and a Purple Crowned Fairy bathing at the pools at Rancho Naturalista.
A Chestnut Mandibled Toucan in clear view close enough that some people couldn't focus binocs on it.
Hummer feeders at several places where there would be multiple
species
too close to focus on (even with 6' close focus).
I loved the translations of some of the names:
Monteverde - Green Mountain
La Selva Verde - the Green Jungle
Cerro de la Muerte - the Mountain of Death
Osa Penninsula - Bear Penninsula
Bosque de la Rio Tigre - Forest of the Tiger River
In Central America, jaguars are known as "el tigre", the tiger.
Here is the list of birds from our Costa Rica trip. In most cases I have only listed the first place we saw each. In cases where we got a distinctly better look at a second place, I've listed it on the right. In cases where the current name differs from the Stiles & Skutch field guide, the old name is in the right hand column.
A location like Rancho->SJ means "during the drive from Rancho Naturalista to San Jose". Bosque del Rio Tigre was our lodge on the Osa Peninsula, Dos Brazos is the nearest village.
