COSTA RICA

9 - 21 October 2006

by Mike Mulligan

In addition to seeing as many species as possible in the areas we would cover, my goals for this trip were to search for migrants and to add to my country bird list. We were prepared for a bit of rain, unusual accommodations, and some skipping about. In spite of several birdless moments, the trip was successful on all counts. Participants, all experienced tropical birders, were Ron Cicerello and Brainard Palmer-Ball of Kentucky, and Ken Havard from Calgary -- plus our professional guide Kevin Easley. Kevin, a good friend, owns Costa Rica Gateway travel agency and monitors rarity reports from the guide community. Here was our itinerary:

October 9     Brainard, Ron and I arrive in San José.

October 10     With Kevin we bird the area around the mouth of Rio Tarcoles (Elegant Tern), Tarcol Lodge and mangroves, stopping at Orotina for the resident Black-and-white Owl. Later we pick up Ken, overnight Kevin’s house, Alajuela.

October 11     Drive toward Limón with a quick stop for the Tropical Mockingbird in Siquirres. We visit Christina Farms and pause along the coastal road to watch an impressive hawk and songbird migration. Overnight El Colibrí Rojo Hotel, Cahuita.

October 12     We visit the Botanical Garden, the Alemendres y Corales resort, and nearby roads. Dip on Shiny Cowbird but find several Black-chested Jays which I’d missed here a couple years ago. Afternoon birding around Puerto Viejo. O/N El Colibrí Rojo Hotel.

October 13     On Hawk Watch Trail we find a Spotted Antbird and a Slaty-backed Forest-Falcon is heard only. After lunch we drive to Hitoy – Cerere National Park, prepare our own supper, overnight in dormitory.

October 14     A couple “good” migrants on the Hitoy – Cerere trails are Gray-cheeked Thrush and Nashville Warbler. We head back up the coast, stopping at Tigre marsh north of Horquetas for Pinnated Bittern. O/N Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, Hotel Bambú.

October 15     Back to Tigre marsh (see Least Bittern but miss Sora), then bird La Selva road and entrance. Drive to Rancho Naturalista, hummingbird feeders (Snowcap) and Rancho Mine Road. O/N Rancho Naturalista.

October 16     Rancho area, strenuous climb up Silent Mountain. Head for Kiri Lodge (O/N).

October 17     Briefly bird Kiri grounds, then to Tapantí National Park (Scaled Antpitta), Lankester Ponds, all the way to Colorado salinas, overnight Hotel Acerradero in Liberia.

October 18     We enter Rincón de la Vieja, Pailas Sector, and climb for several hours into treeless area. Look for Rock Wren in wind and rain on the exposed (and scary) slope. No wren but a Townsend’s Warbler flies in. It’s a long but enjoyable day. O/N Hotel Acerradero.

October 19     We’re not too far from La Guinea (near Filadelfia), so head southwest and search for Black-headed Munia. And there they are, right where we missed them last April. Then back to the InterAmerican Highway, down to Bagaces and northeast past Miravalles to the Caribbean lowlands. Pass through Upala, overnight at Natural Lodge in Caño Negro. Thanks to Kevin’s tape we find another bird missed six months ago, Spot-breasted Wren.

October 20     A morning boat trip on the river is a pleasure. We spot a large boa sleeping in a tree, harassed by a Barred Antshrike and a Rufous-browed Peppershrike. Several Bare-crowned Antbirds lurk nearby, and we find another Pinnated Bittern. It’s time to head back, so we drive east and south to La Virgen and the Cinchona hummingbird stop, then on to Alajuela.

October 21     Fly home

The attached list of 389 species represents birds recorded on this trip, including several heard only. For most of them I’ve indicated one or more locations, usually including our initial sighting. For more common species I’ve simply shown the number of days recorded. The Spot-breasted Wren seen at Caño Negro was my 743rd for the country.
