BRAZIL
29 May - 6 July 2002
by Greg Roberts
With Glenn Scherf. We flew into Rio de Janeiro from Santiago and hired
a
vehicle for the trip through “south-east” Brazil - Itatiaia, Ubatuba,
Serra
Canastra, Caraca and Serra Dos Orgaos. We then flew to Cuiaba and hired
another
vehicle for visits to the Pantanal and Chapada. From Cuiaba we took the
overnight
bus to Alta Floresta for the visit to Amazonia, returning the same way
before
flying back to Rio.
29/5-2/6 - Itataia National Park - Focusing mainly on the
excellent
Tres Pecos trail and to a lesser extent the Macomba trail and around
our
base, the expensive but good Hotel Simon (1080m). One day was occupied
along
the Agulhas Negras road (to 2400m).
2-6/6 - Ubatuba area - From our base at the pleasant
Hotel
Villa di Capri, two mornings were occupied at Fazenda (F) Angelim, with
a
short visit to the nearby Fazenda Capricornio. A third morning was
occupied
at the Folca Seca site west of Ubatuba.
6-11/6 - Serra Canastra National Park - Staying at the
Pousada
Barcellos in Sao Roque des Minas, highly recommended, most days were
occupied
in the campo and cerrado of the “upper” park, with one day in the
“lower”
park, visiting the Casca d’Ante waterfall via the town of Vargem Bonita.
11-13/6 - Caraca - The monastry set splendidly amidst the
forest
was our lodging, not to be missed. The Tanqe Grande was the main trail
used.
13-14/6 - Serra Dos Orgaos National Park. Visited for one
full
day from Telespolis, walking to 1600m, but it was generally
disappointing.
15-20/6 - Pantanal - Two nights were spent at the
ordinary
Hotel Mato Grosso on the Pixaim River, where access to gallery forest
is
good. Three nights were occupied at the even more ordinary Jaguar
Ecological
Reserve lodge, which deserves patronage because its owners are doing
the
right things environmentally and good habitat, including Campe Jofre,
is
close by. Plenty of spotlighting here, but no jaguars.
20-23/6 - Chapada dos Guimares - Accommodation at the
worthy
Pousada Laura Vicuna. Cerrado along the road to Agua Fria was visited
twice,
with heavy fog rendering one morning futile. The Veu de Noiva waterfall
in
the national park was visited, along with the forest behind Portao da
Fe.
24-1/7 - Cristalino Jungle Lodge near Alta Floresta, on
the
Rio Cristalino, a tributary of the Rio Teles Peris, where an island was
visited.
Paul Donahue was an excellent guide here, aided ably by Telesa Wood and
Peter
Ginsburg. All tracks were walked. The birds and accommodation were
superb.
2-6/7 - Rio de Janeiro at Cococabana, little birding here.
