Birding the Americas Trip Report and Planning Repository1 - 15 August 1998
by Brad Bergstrom
Below is a list of 466 species of birds identified in approx. 2 weeks by a group of 9 birders in northern Ecuador, visiting half a dozen sites from the Andes down the Pacific slope and ending up along the Napo River in the Amazon Basin. Juan Veintimilla of Quito made in-country arrangements. John Rollins, an American ex-pat and noted Ecuadorian birder helped out with guiding at Yanacocha. Venicio Perez (who has an amazing ear and memory and an Ecuadorian life list of 1400) guided us to a Cock-of-the-Rock lek and many other fabulous birds on his own property outside of Mindo. Our native guide, Oscar, at Sacha Lodge on the Napo was equally skilled at bird-finding--from the forest trails, the 140-ft tree tower, and the dugout canoe.
Highlights included 45 species of tanagers and allies, 37 species of hummingbirds, 61 tyrannids, 19 parrots, 10 toucans, 5 barbets, 7 nightjars, 6 trogons, 20 furnariids, 24 antbirds, and the famed hoatzin; also 5 monkeys, sloths, agouti, caiman, and a 7.1 magnitude earthquake.
We saw some of the Ecuadorian endemics, including Pale-mandibled Aracari, some Choco forest endemics such as Scarlet-breasted Dacnis and Silver-throated Warbler and some Amazonian river-island endemics, including White-bellied Spinetail, Olive-spotted Hummingbird, and Castelnau's Antshrike.
We spent the following times (days) at the following localities and habitats, which are recorded for each species (see legend): Interandean, urban parks (1); paramo, Cotapaxi NP (<1 day, 1 person); pre-paramo/ polylepis forest at Yanacocha (<1); cloudforest in Bellavista area (3; includes entrance Rd., part of old Nono-Mindo Rd. and "Lindo Mindo" gardens along main Hwy north of town of Mindo); montane forest at/near Mindo-Nambillo preserve and town of Mindo (2); pre-montane Choco rainforest along Rio Silanche, near Pedro Vicente Maldonado (<1); Pacific lowland Rainforest at Rio Palenque (1; includes roadside areas near Santo Domingo de los Colorados); pre-montane forest at Tinalandia (1.5); Amazonian lowland rainforest (3).
